I can honestly say that I have been totally wowed by the training. I’ve been teaching for 20 years and for the first time feel I could teach reading in a confident and structured manner. I strongly believe that this programme should be part of our teacher training process so that reading is taught using the code and keys. Following the training I need time to assimilate the information, organise my resources and practice the sessions but I am confident that once this process is complete I will have found a method to teach reading that will help me to move children forward and achieve success. This programme fits perfectly into the school systems as it helps me to assess children, set targets and measure progress. I am confident that we will be able to measure impact easily and see the difference the SRS has made to the children in our schools. J.S SENCO for Newark Town
This programme has made a big impact on me. The understanding of the code and the four keys has made me realise how difficult it is for children to learn to read, write and spell. When I am teaching reading and spelling now I can see where they are going wrong, why they are going wrong, and exactly how I can help them.
This course has been a real eye opener for me. It has been a really intense course, but so worth while. My understanding of how children learn to read, write and spell had grown immensely. I can see where they need help, and why. It all makes so much sense, and although to start with it will take some time, I know once I have started to run with it with the children, it will all make even more sense. I feel excited about this and can’t wait to get started with the children. Fionais very passionate about the SRS and I can definitely see why. I know that this system of teaching children to read, write and spell, will be something I will use for a very very long time. To see the look on a child’s face when they have read a book, spelt a word, or written it correctly for the first time, is what its all about! L.P
My understanding on the code and the four keys has brought about a realisation that reading and spelling should be approached in an uncomplicated manner. Children will find it easier to gain an understanding of the English alphabet code and how to use it if this is not complicated with jargon and technical vocabulary for which the children have no use… I have found the four day to be enlightening and extremely interesting. I found the course both enlightening and inspiring. I am looking forward to putting it into practice ‘for real’. YS
From the very beginning I could see how this would help me teach the children that I work with in a new and exciting way…. From going on this course I have changed the way I look at the alphabet, letters and spellings all around school, displays etc and can see how just changing little things can help. I even say to children ‘This is the /a-e/ sound’ and even though they have not been taught the code properly they seem to understand more if I tell them this way. I definitely see a way it will improve children’s reading and spelling and even writing in the future. I found the course completely riveting and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make a difference to children’s learning. E.G
I now have a basic logical structure that I can teach, which incorporates the basic skills of segmenting and blending and sound processing – these basic skills access the necessary information in careful logical steps so that the children (and the teachers/parents) understand… It has given me the knowledge to go away and teach these children with a good structured programme where the learner will not be confused. It has taught me how to teach the code to children in easy logical steps. The children I work with will surely benefit from this programme and it’s now my turn to go away with the knowledge and implement it. J.H
The course was very intense and hard work, but so relevant. By going back to the basics of the alphabet code and showing how these can be taught and extended it was possible to see how reading and spelling could be taught systematically from the simple to the more complex level. Also, the use of VAK methods to introduce and consolidate learning catered for different learning styles in pupils as well as the enhancement of reading skills by a multi-sensory approach. K.P
The code will allow me to plan activities for my less able children which they can build upon and work on in simple logical and sequential steps. It has already allowed me to become aware of areas that my class may have gaps in knowledge or understanding in regards to spelling. It has also given me the tools to correct or teach to these gaps….SRS …will allow us to create a simple, logical and child friendly approach to reading and spelling throughout the school. It will provide all children with the tools they need to read and read confidently allowing children to enjoy books and the wider world around them. J.H
The code and the four keys seem to be a more logical way of teaching reading and spelling. It makes you question the way things have been done for so long. It also makes you realise how opaque our alphabet code is without the keys to unlock it. R.D
…The programme of work is logical, clear and makes sense. L.D
A very informative course which completely changed my ideas on how to teach children to read and write. The code itself is so obvious once it has been revealed. I will definitely be using the programme with the children that I work with. The SRS has given me hope that these children can become readers! S.O
